HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
Patron, Garrick Club 1952-2021

It is with enormous sadness that today we record the death of our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip had been a member of the Club since 1948, having been proposed as a candidate under his earlier title of Lieutenant Mountbatten RN in October 1947 (just before his marriage to Princess Elizabeth). He was our oldest member in two senses: in years of life as well as of Club membership.

He became Patron in 1952, and the most recent dinner in his honour at the Club was on 15 March 2012 to mark both the sixtieth anniversary of his tenure and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The portrait of Prince Philip which accompanies this note was drawn in 1979 by former Works of Art Chairman John Gilroy. It is black and red chalk and currently hangs in the Secretary’s office; however, it will be on display on the first floor of the clubhouse when we reopen on 17 May.

We send our condolences and deepest sympathy to Her Majesty the Queen, to their Royal Highnesses and to all other members of the Royal Family.
